“Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson is releasing a three-part documentary series about the Beatles for Disney + in November.
Beatles fans will see a special documentary at the end of the year. “The Beatles: Get back” will be shown as a three-part documentary series on Disney + from November. The streaming service has now announced that. “The Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson (59) is responsible for the series.
The individual episodes of the documentary series, each around two hours long, are to be published on three consecutive days – on November 25th, 26th and 27th. Jackson had seen an enormous amount of footage for “The Beatles: Get back” in a good three years. A total of more than six hours of unpublished image material should be shown, including the Beatles’ last live performance in its entirety.
“The Beatles: Get back” was put together from more than 60 hours of film material, which Michael Lindsay-Hogg (81) recorded in 1969, was previously unpublished and has now been restored. Around 150 hours of unpublished audio material were available for this purpose. Jackson is the only one who has had access to private film archives for 50 years.
Intimacy “that one would never have thought possible”
Among other things, intimate recording sessions by John Lennon (1940-1980), Paul McCartney (78), George Harrison (1943-2001) and Ringo Starr (80) should be seen. According to a statement, the documentary shows “the warmth, camaraderie and creative genius that shaped the legacy of the iconic four”.
“In many ways, Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s remarkable footage captured multiple storylines,” Jackson explains in the press release. It tells the “stories of friends and of individuals” as well as “the story of human weakness and a divine partnership”. It is also “a detailed report on the creative process in which the production of iconic songs happened under pressure, in the midst of the social climate of 1969”.
At the same time the whole thing is “not nostalgia – it’s raw, honest and human. In six hours you will get to know The Beatles with an intimacy that you never thought possible”. The director is “very grateful” to be able to show this story in exactly this way.
Before the premiere of the documentary series, a book entitled “The Beatles: Get Back” will also be published on October 12th, which will contain hundreds of exclusive and previously unpublished photos. A German edition is due to be published on October 15th.
