The best antivirus program according to Stiftung Warentest: A new winner and a violent crash

However, finding the right one is not that easy because there is a huge selection. A comparison test can help you when you are spoiled for choice.

Consumers particularly trust Stiftung Warentest. It represents a real institution when it comes to test reports. The foundation recently took a closer look at 19 antivirus programs for Windows and 9 for Mac and is now presenting a new test winner. But before we introduce you to the test winner, we want to tell you which program you should stay away from, according to Stiftung Warentest.

Hard blow for Microsoft

Windows users might be better off looking for new protection. The in-house and pre-installed virus protection Windows Defender comes in last place with a grade of “satisfactory”. The main reason for this is the lack of protection against phishing.

In addition, the software was not able to detect some malware in the test. This problem has recently been exploited by cybercriminals. The test winner represents a suitable alternative.

Good protection has its price

In 2024, G Data Internet Security will emerge as the winner in the comparison by Stiftung Warentest. The software was impressive with good performance and strong protection and received a “very good” rating. However, you have to invest 25 euros per year to ensure the security of your Windows PC.

Even Mac users can’t avoid spending money on the best antivirus program. According to Stiftung Warentest, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac is the best solution for Apple device owners. A subscription costs 20 euros per year.

Bitdefender was also convincing in our test of the best antivirus programs and emerged as the winner. G Data came in eighth place. To be fair, however, it must be said that we tested a different version than Stiftung Warentest.

Security without high costs

However, to protect yourself from cyber threats, you don’t automatically have to reach for your wallet. There are also free antivirus programs that offer you security and are in no way inferior to paid applications.

Stiftung Warentest recommends Bitdefender Antivirus Free for Windows and Avast One Essential as well as AVG Antivirus for Mac. The result therefore corresponds to our experience report. Bitdefender also emerged as the winner. The complete security and additional functions such as VPN, parental controls and password manager were convincing.
