The best film production of the year? Neither Spielberg nor Top Gun Maverick at the 2023 DGA Awards

The 75th annual Directors Guild of America Awards, hosted by the directors union, presented its 2023 awards this Saturday. With a surprise on the cinema side, which did not see the triumph of Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans”.

On March 12, the cinema planet has an appointment for the 95th Oscars ceremony. Upstream of the Hollywood high mass, several events are beginning to shape the winners… or to reshuffle the cards. This is the case of 75th DGA Awardswhich were held this Saturday, February 18 in Los Angeles, and which crowned the best filmmakers of the year, elected by their some 19,000 peers from the union of directors and directors.

If Steven Spielberg, nominated for the thirteenth time in his career, was a big favorite after his Golden Globes received at the start of the year for The Fabelmans, another director was finally preferred to him. Or rather two, since it was the Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert duo who received the trophy for Best Cinematography of the Year for Everything Everywhere All at Once. A reward that now positions them as the probable winners of the Oscar in a few weeks, the list of winners of the DGA Awards having been different from that of the Oscars only eight times in 75 years.

The multiverse film, surprise hit of the year across the Atlantic with more than 70 million dollars in revenue, was also preferred to Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin), Todd Field (Tár) and Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun maverick). The film worn by Tom Cruise, savior of the “loaves of Hollywood” according to Spielberg himself, however, did not leave empty-handed, with a salvo of (very) direct attacks from master of ceremonies Judd Apatow in his speech.

The director thus evoked the size of the actor (“The special effects were so good that I couldn’t see the pile of phone books that Tom Cruise was sitting on to reach the controls”), his old escapades (“Remember, when Tom Cruise was jumping on a couch we all said he was crazy, and now he’s jumping off a cliff on a motorcycle thinking he’s fine!”) or membership in the Church of Scientology (“Every time he does a new stunt, I feel like I’m seeing a Scientology commercial. Is that in Dianetics? Because there’s nothing about jumping off a cliff in the Torah”). Atmosphere.

The rest of the winners crowned the series Euphoria (directing for a drama series), Barry (directing for a comedy series, the third trophy for Bill Hader in… three seasons!), Station Eleven (directing for a mini-series) , the documentary Fire of Love, and Aftersun for directing a first film. In this category, the feature film by Charlotte Wells, released on our screens on February 1, was notably preferred to two French productions: Saint Omer by Alice Diop and L’Evénement by Audrey Diwan.
