Did you know ? Today the Saturday, August 13, 2022it’s here International Left-Handers Day ! With just over 16% of left-handers in the world, we wanted to celebrate them and show you that in video games, some iconic characters are too. Since the majority of the population is right-handed, the video game industry has gone to great lengths to ensure that most of the characters you meet follow the same path. All shooting games or swords have right-handed characters who handle their respective weapons accordingly… and yet!
Without further ado, here are 5 characters who have developed the right hemisphere of their brain much better.
Link – in Zelda
You will see it in this top, Nintendo is a staunch defender of lefties and does not hesitate to give this trait to several of its most famous characters like this good old hero dressed in green. Yes, Link does indeed wield his sword with his left hand while he carries the shield in his right hand. Unfortunately, Link suffered a terrible fate with the arrival of the Wii.
The console then offering the use of the famous Wiimote to control his character, it was necessary to adapt to the majority of the population and make Link right-handed. Therefore, even in Breath of the Wild, you will see that Link is right-handed and no longer left-handed.
Mega Man
Main character of the eponymous series, Mega Man made his debut in 1987 in Japan and quickly became an iconic game in video game culture. It can boast of having more than a dozen titles to its name, not counting spin-offs and anime adaptations. And it’s always with his left arm that the humanoid robot pulls!
Waluigi
The Mario series features a large number of left-handed and ambidextrous characters. This is largely due to the preference of its creator, Shigeru Miyamoto given that he himself is left-handed. Most of the time, characters like Bowser Junior or Waluigi are first right-handed and then become left-handed in one of the games in the series. Here Waluigi becomes it in Mario Baseball games.
Sephiroth
Although he can wield the sword with both hands (ambidextrous), this iconic Final Fantasy 7 character is mostly left-handed. We see it in the games but also in the film Advent Children.
Chrono – Chrono Trigger
Main character of Crono Trigger, little Crono is left-handed. Most of the official images and illustrations of the character indeed show him wielding his Katana with his left hand. And for the fans, know that a remake of Chrono Trigger is in preparation!
Other notable left-handed characters
- Nero in Devil May Cry 4
- Sheva Alomar in Resident Evil 5
- Raphael Sorel in Soulcalibur 2
- Zoro in One Piece games
- Alm in Fire Emblem Echoes of Valentia
- Shadow in Sonic
If you know of any others, please let us know in the comments.
Finally, note that many pop-culture characters are also left-handed: Mulan, Arya Stark or even Sasuke are.
