The Best Password Managers: These are our top picks

Google Chrome (score 2.6), Mozilla Firefox (score 3.7) and Microsoft Edge (score 4.1) occupy the last places in our large-scale password manager test. On the other hand, there are 1Password (Score 1.3), LastPass Premium (Score 1.4) and Bitwarden Premium (Score 1.7), which are very easy to use and offer good security.

KeePassXC: The free alternative in detail

The free password manager KeePassXC (available for download) is not quite as convenient as some paid competing products, but it is not difficult to set up and use, because an assistant supports you in creating the password database. If individual points are unfamiliar to you, simply stick with the good default settings. However, if you want, you can set some parameters yourself, such as the encryption algorithm.

However, the most important thing is: Assign a secure, one-time master password (called database password here) – after all, the manager should later keep all other passwords safe.

If you have previously left passwords to your browser, you can easily save them as a CSV file and import them into KeePassXC. But don’t forget to delete the file afterwards – it contains all passwords in plain text.
