Branches of trees, shrubs and other plants are best cut with pruning shears. A distinction is made between two types of pruning shears: the anvil and bypass mechanisms.
Anvil shears have only one blade. After cutting through the wood, this hits the so-called anvil, the blunt counterpart of the blade. The power transmission is better with these pruning shears than with models with a bypass mechanism. The anvil shears are best suited for branches up to 35 millimeters in diameter and coarser work. It is primarily used for cutting hard, dry wood.
The bypass scissors, on the other hand, have two sharp blades. These allow for a more delicate cut. The effort required with this type of pruning shears is higher and is more suitable for thin, soft or fresh wood, for example for cutting shrubs.
