To cope with inflation, some French people may be tempted to shop in Spain. Some products are significantly cheaper there, but not all.

France is facing significant inflation. In October, the year-on-year price increase exceeded 6%. But this figure takes into account the tariff shields put in place in the energy sectors and only represents a general average. FMCGs may have seen higher price increases. This is particularly the case for food products, which experienced double-digit inflation. The impact on households’ daily receipts may therefore be greater.

Some may therefore be tempted to cross the border to see if the grass is greener elsewhere. In terms of prices, Spain is renowned for offering attractive rates. In fact, the minimum wage barely exceeds €1,000 and the average salary is around €1,700. Furthermore, the taxes on consumer products are generally lower there. On the other hand, Spain experienced higher inflation in one year, by some 7.3%.

Enough to consider that all the products are cheaper there. This is not a generality. Thus, according to the test of 20 minutes, fruit and vegetables are generally much cheaper in Spain than in France. This is also the case for meat, which is on average 50% cheaper. Detergents and hygiene products are also almost half the price.

On the other hand, the difference on starchy foods is largely favorable to France, especially on pasta since France is a major wheat producer. France is also doing well with products of which the French are big consumers, such as spreads. Cereals, eggs or coffee capsules are also cheaper there.
