Christoph Maria Herbst faces a new challenge. In "The Big Fake" he slips into the role of Wirecard boss Markus Braun.

For his new project, Christoph Maria Herbst ("Stromberg") has to leave his comedic image behind. The 54-year-old takes on the leading role in the TVNow docudrama "The Big Fake – The Wirecard Story". He plays the imprisoned Wirecard boss Markus Braun (52). "Der Pass" star Franz Hartwig (35) can also be seen in a leading role. His character: Jan Marsalek (40), who is still in hiding, and a former board member of Wirecard AG.

How did the accounting scandal come about?

The shooting of the docudrama, in which "Charité" actress Nina Kunzendorf (49) also participates, began this week in Berlin. According to the broadcaster RTL, the project is supposed to be a mix of documentation and fictional narrative that sheds light on what is probably the biggest accounting scandal in German economic history. What makes the power people Braun and Marsalek tick? What dimensions has the billion-dollar fraud actually assumed?

The concept and script for "The Big Fake – The Wirecard Story" were written by Raymond Ley (62, "The Night of the Great Flood") and his wife Hannah Ley (born 1970). The writer and director will also direct the docudrama. The publication on TVNow is planned for the first quarter of 2021.
