These statistics are just embarrassing for Telekom, Vodafone, O2, 1 & 1 and Co. According to the annual report on broadband measurement of the Federal Network Agency only 12.8 percent of all German Internet users get the contractually guaranteed Internet speed on their connections. In other words, this means that only every eighth German receives the agreed maximum data transmission rate over the broadband network.

According to the Broadband Measurement Report, across all bandwidth classes and providers, 71.3 percent of users received at least half of the contracted data transfer rate. Most Internet users in this country therefore pay for an Internet connection, which is nowhere near as fast as users in the contract was assured.

Hardly any improvement compared to previous years

“Even in the third year of our broadband measurement, there are few changes: Customers across all bandwidth classes and providers often do not reach the maximum speed they were promised,” said Jochen Homann, President of the Federal Network Agency, on the measurements.

In the run-up to broadband measurements by the Federal Network Agency, customer satisfaction was also inquired. The proportion of consumers who were satisfied with the provider’s performance and rated it “very good”, “good” or “satisfactory” had declined slightly year-on-year at 62 percent.

Background

How to test your Internet speed

For consumers, the numbers of the network agency are not necessarily surprising. Many Internet users are stuck in contracts and often pay too much while not even the promised data transfer rate arrives. To test the speed of your own broadband connection, consumers can use a speed testto perform. This is about the speed test of CHIP.de, or with the broadband measurement ofthe Federal Network Agency.

Anyone who finds that the Internet connection delivers far less than the contractually guaranteed speed can resist. In such a case, the ConsumerAdvice Center recommends that the Internet Service Provider be asked first to properly fulfill the contract. This should be done best in writing – by a letter of entry – and the provider set a reasonable period of 14 days.

If the Internet connection is still too slow after that, customers have the right, according to the Consumer Center, to terminate without notice. Even claims for damages are possible if the provider does not comply with the requests.
