The music world mourns the loss of one of its greats: producer Clarence Avant, also known as “The Black Godfather”, died at the age of 92.
The American music producer and businessman Clarence Avant is dead. According to US media, the music legend known as “The Black Godfather” died last Sunday (August 13) at the age of 92 at his Los Angeles estate. “It is with a heavy heart that the Avant/Sarandos family announces the passing of Clarence Alexander Avant”, quotes “Variety” from a statement by the bereaved, his children Nicole and Alexander and son-in-law Ted Sarandos.
The statement continued: “Through his revolutionary leadership, Clarence has become known affectionately as ‘The Black Godfather’ in the world of music, entertainment, politics and sport. Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and companions, who changed the world – and will continue to change it for generations to come. The joy of his legacy eases the pain of his loss.”
As an influential music producer, Avant steered the fortunes of big stars for decades, including with the world-famous label Motown Records. His close friends and admirers also included rappers Jay-Z (53) and Sean “Diddy” Combs (53). In 2016, Avant received a star on the Walk of Fame and two years later received an honorary Grammy. When he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, former President Barack Obama (62) spoke about the immense influence that Avant had on the music industry.
A heavy blow of fate
In December 2021, Avant and his family had to cope with a heavy blow of fate. Jacqueline Avant, to whom the music legend had been married since 1967, fell victim to a violent crime. She was shot dead by a burglar at her Beverly Hills home it was said at the time, among other things, on “Variety”.
Jacqueline Avant was known for her charity work. Former US President Bill Clinton (76) published after her death via social media a statement: “Jackie Avant was a wonderful woman, a great partner to Clarence and mother to Alex and Nicole, an active citizen and a dear friend of Hillary and I for 30 years,” he explained. “She inspired admiration, respect and affection from all who knew her. We are heartbroken. She is greatly missed.”
