While the film served as the opening film at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival and is scheduled to be released in US cinemas from December 8, 2023, a release date has not yet been set in this country. We will keep you up to date with any information in this regard here.
In Japan, the film was released in cinemas in July 2023 without prior notice, which caused astonishment and enthusiasm. Only a mysterious drawing of a heron was published in advance. The film has already been widely marketed in the USA.

The idea for “The Boy and the Heron” was inspired by the Japanese novel of the same name. The screenplay and direction were taken over by filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (“Spirited Away”, “Princess Mononoke”). The film was produced by Toshio Suzuki in collaboration with Studio Ghibli.
