It has been six years since Brave launched the mission to oppose a real counter-power to Google. And the new functionality expected in version 1.38 of the Navigator moreover carries him a frontal attack.

Already available on the nightly and beta versions of Brave, the function called “De-AMP” does exactly what its surname suggests.

Restrict the scope of action of Google

After launching its own search engine, its videoconferencing tool, and in its quest to imagine a fairer Web in terms of compensation for rights holders, Brave wants to push Google out of the information field.

AMP, for Accelerated Mobile Pages, is an open source technology supported by Google. His role ? Offer mobile-optimized versions of certain web articles to make them load faster — while presenting themselves in a more digestible form for smartphone reading.

Only, the maneuver being automatic, it does not please Brave. The editor sees it as an additional nail in the coffin of privacy on the Internet (Google refines your preferences according to the AMP links you consult); a security threat (AMP makes users believe that they are viewing the real website and not a declined version); but also reinforces Google’s monopoly online and its protocols.

How does Brave want to implement “De-AMP”?

We get it: Brave has trouble with AMP pages. And it intends to offer its users a feature that allows them to do without it completely.

How ? The idea is quite simple. Based on the observation that AMP is ultimately only a redirect to a URL ending in “.amp.html”, the browser will read the links you click on and automatically redirect you to the “normal” web page. what you expect. All this before Google code is even read and executed, the press release states.

We understand that the “De-AMP” will be a feature activated by default on the different versions of the browser. Optional, it can however be deactivated.

The fact is that Google is by far the majority acquisition channel for websites today. And that refusing to serve AMP versions of its articles can harm our visibility on search engines.

In this, Brave is not wrong when he talks about monopoly. Unfortunately, it seems that the rules of this game are for the moment immutable.
