The flagship index of the Paris Stock Exchange has climbed nearly 8% since the start of the year and has thus returned to its levels before the invasion of Ukraine. What follows is more difficult.
Investors are smiling. After a very trying 2022 vintage, the markets are celebrating at the start of the year. The CAC 40 climbed to more than 7000 points Thursday in session. It ended the day just below this threshold, at 6975.68 points, up 0.74%. The flagship index of the Paris Stock Exchange has thus returned to its levels of February 2022, before the war in Ukraine and the aggressive campaigns of rate hikes by the major central banks of the planet.
Since the beginning of the year, in less than two weeks, the CAC 40 has already won almost 8%. The index had already withstood the avalanche of bad news in 2022 particularly well. It ended the year with a decline of around 8%. It has thus largely limited the breakage compared to the other major indices. The German Dax, its closest rival, lost almost 12%. The EuroStoxx 50, the index of the 50 largest European companies, for its part dropped around 11%.
