The call from Macron, Al-Sissi and King Abdullah II for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza

Lhe war in Gaza and the catastrophic human suffering it causes must end immediately. No peace in the Middle East can come from terrorism, violence or war. It will result from the two-state solution. This is the only credible option to guarantee peace and security for all and ensure that neither Israelis nor Palestinians have to relive the horrors that have struck them since the attacks of October 7, 2023.

On March 25, the United Nations Security Council finally assumed its responsibilities by demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. This was a crucial step, which must be implemented without further delay.

Faced with the intolerable number of victims, we, the heads of state of Egypt, France and Jordan, demand the immediate and unconditional implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2728. We emphasize the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

We emphasize the urgent need to implement the Security Council’s call for the immediate release of all hostages and reaffirm our support for the negotiations conducted with the mediation of Egypt, the United States of America and the Qatar regarding the ceasefire, hostages and prisoners.

Equal respect for all lives

Urging all parties to respect all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, we warn of the dangerous consequences of an Israeli offensive in Rafah, where more than 1.5 million Palestinian civilians have sought refuge. Such an offensive will only increase human losses and suffering, aggravate the risk and consequences of mass forced displacement of Gaza’s population and pose a threat of escalation in the region.

We reaffirm our equal respect for all lives. We condemn all violations of international humanitarian law, including all acts of violence and terrorism and indiscriminate attacks against civilians. The protection of civilians is a fundamental legal obligation incumbent on all parties and constitutes the cornerstone of international humanitarian law. It is absolutely forbidden to contravene it.

Palestinians in Gaza are no longer just at risk of famine; it is already installed. A massive increase in the provision and distribution of humanitarian aid is urgently needed. This request is at the heart of United Nations Security Council Resolutions 2720 and 2728, which emphasize the urgent need to increase the delivery of humanitarian aid.
