The latter, who wanted to denounce the sexual violence inflicted on Ukrainian women, was quickly evacuated.
Since Tuesday, May 17, international stars have paraded on the red carpet of the Cannes film festival. Among them, the actor Tom Cruise who made his comeback after several years of absence. Like him, other big names have had the chance to participate in the famous climb of the steps: Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Omar Sy, or even the former Miss Universe Iris Mittenaere. But it also sometimes happens that the organizers of the event are faced with some unforeseen events.
Indeed, this Friday, May 20, the rise of the steps of the film three thousand years waiting for you of George Millerwas disturbed by theirruption of a woman on the Red carpet. As we can discover on a video shared by the France 3 Côte d’Azur channel on Twitter, the young woman presented herself bare breasts, body covered with paint in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, and panties smeared with red paint. She then started running and screaming in front of the reporters.
An irruption to denounce sexual violence in Ukraine
As our colleagues point out, the activist also had a message written in English on the body: “Stop raping us”. She was finally quickly covered with a coat by Cannes Film Festival security guards and then evacuated. The action was later claimed by SCUM, a movement of feminist and radical activists. They wanted soto denounce the sexual violence inflicted on Ukrainian women in the context of the war”.
In early May, the European Parliament condemned the use of sexual violence as “war weapon” in Ukraine, invaded by Russia. He had also asked the countries which welcome women fleeing the country to give them access to gynecological care, contraception and abortion. For his part, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had denounced from mid-Aprilhundreds of rape cases” observed in areas previously occupied by the Russian army, “including young underage girls and very small children”.
