The Chicks: Country trio removes "Dixie" from its name

The country trio Dixie Chicks changes its name and will be called The Chicks in the future. The reason is the racist reference to the term "Dixie".

The legendary US country trio The Dixie Chicks ("I Can Love You Better") changes its name in the light of the Black Lives Matter protests and will only perform as The Chicks in the future. The three musicians Natalie Maines (45), Emily Strayer (47) and Martie Maguire (50) changed their names on their social media channels and website and published them including a new song on Twitter.

That is behind the name change

The band commented on the video with an anonymous quote: "If your voice had no power, they wouldn't want to silence it." The song "MarchMarch" should become part of their new album "Gaslighter". It is the Chicks' fifth studio album and their first in 14 years. "Gaslighter" will be released on July 17th.

In the United States, the term "Dixie" stands for the southern states, especially those who were part of the Confederates and who advocated the continued existence of slavery. He originally referred to a geographical indication: the states south of the Mason-Dixon Line, which was measured in the 1760s and is still valid today as the state border between Pennsylvania and Maryland.
