According to the Moroccan Interior Ministry, at least 2,012 people diedand more than 2,000 people were injured, 1,404 of them seriously. Several buildings, including traditional houses, collapsed in the communes of Al-Haouz (the epicenter, south-west of Marrakech), Taroudant, Chichaoua, Ouarzazate and Marrakech. The earthquake, of unprecedented power in the country, was so violent that it was felt as far away as Portugal. So there are very few things on earth. But thank God we are fine.“ She concludes her message with a thought for Moroccan families in mourning. Franco-Moroccan personalities express their support
In France, Franco-Moroccan personalities expressed their solidarity and their dismay in the face of the tragedy. “Terrible night, terrible awakening. All my support and thoughts to the victims, their loved ones and all those affected by the earthquake“, wrote comedian Jamel Debbouze, organizer of the Marrakech laughter festival, on his Instagram account. Host Arthur said on X (formerly Twitter) “with all my heart with Morocco in this painful ordeal”. The comedian Gad Elmaleh, born in Casablanca, is “upset by the disaster that struck Morocco”. He said he wanted to go there soon to support the victims and relayed the call for donations from Secours populaire. Other associations such as the Red Cross, Unicef and the Fondation de France also requested the solidarity of the French.
