A brand new operating system named OpenKylin has just been launched in China. Based on a source code under free license, its ambition is to become a strong competitor for Windows, but also macOs.

Currently, Windows is used on the vast majority of computers in China. In a context of geopolitical tensions and restrictions, particularly in the field of components, the country wishes to become less dependent on the United States. So he developed his own technology.

A Linux-based operating system

This Wednesday, Chinese state media announced the release of the OpenKylin operating system, whose name is inspired by Asian mythology. Distributed under an open source license, it is based on Linux. The OpenKylin code is open to everyone. It can therefore be modified by anyone who wishes to contribute to the improvement of this technology.

More than 4,000 developers have worked on this innovative software, which is already used in several large-scale projects, such as the country’s space programs. The stated objective is to offer an alternative to the American giants, whose proprietary format has long worried China. It has been decades since the country announced that it wanted to design its own operating system.

Operating systems, a major challenge for China

The demand for operating systems is particularly strong in Asia. It is estimated that currently, the Chinese market would represent more than 15.5 billion yuan (or 2.1 billion dollars). In addition, a dozen companies would also work on systems that could eventually compete with American software. Unsurprisingly, the creation of the OpenKylin operating system interested many companies, which did not hesitate to actively participate in its design. The software has notably received support from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Achieving technological independence is, as we can see, a crucial issue for the country. We remember that just a few months ago, the Chinese State Council had stressed the importance of ” accelerate the achievement of high-level scientific and technological autonomy and sophistication. “. The announcement of the arrival of OpenKylin on the market clearly goes in this direction.
