During filming, production on The Chosen One came to a halt due to a car accident that claimed the lives of two actors, Ray Garduño and Juan Francisco González, and seriously injured six others.
The drama unfolded on June 16, 2022 aboard a van heading to Mexico City Airport, Mexico, as the team prepared to take advantage of a week and a half off. Eight people were in the vehicle: the two deceased actors, actor Yeray Albelda, two stunt coordinators, an underage actor, his guardian and the driver.
The latter lost control of the car which subsequently overturned. The writer Rick Zazueta, who participates in the series, points the finger, in a message posted on Facebook two days later, on June 18, to the working conditions on the set of the series and the many hours of compulsory transport to transport the team. He also explains that the van transporting them was showing worrying signs, such as “worn tires, noisy brakes, loose steering wheel and faulty seat belts.”
Relatives of the two victims express their concerns about the many logistical problems on the set. But in a statement issued on June 20, shared by Vulturethe Netflix platform and the production company Redrum claim that all security measures were up to standard and that this was an unfortunate accident.
One of the survivors, actor Yeray Albelda confides in the Los Angeles Times on June 20 and refutes author Rick Zazueta’s comments. He claims to have “saw nothing strange” on board the van. The actor nevertheless explains that many people in the production complained about the two-hour drive each day to access the filming, for lack of hotels nearby.
