Did you know ? With Great Hopes, Sylvain Desclous signs a political drama about a political heroine who carries within her the will and the ambition to change the world. The director refused to make her a saint or an upstart, and wanted to show her in all her complexity and ambiguity. “The film can also be seen as the birth of a woman politician, and why not of a future president.”

Eternal Daughter by Joanna Hogg

What is it about ? Julie, accompanied by her elderly mother, comes to take a few days off in a hotel lost in the English countryside. The young woman, director in full doubt, hopes to find inspiration there; her mother sees it as an opportunity to bring back distant memories, between the walls of this building she frequented in her youth.

Did you know ? Eternal Daughter marks the fourth collaboration between Tilda Swinton and Joanna Hogg, following Caprice (1986), The Souvenir (2019) and The Souvenir: Part II (2021). For the director, their friendship reinforced the richness and emotion of the film.

Did you know ? Sur les chemins noirs is an adaptation of the autobiographical novel of the same name by Sylvain Tesson, published in 2016. Denis Imbert worked on the screenplay with Diasteme. The latter took care of everything that was literary. The director details: “he [a amené] the skeleton and I the flesh. I thus brought all the flashbacks, all the stories, the psyche of the character, that I was able to tell myself around the story and which came to feed the march.

Did you know ? Dalva was born from an imbroglio of several elements that Emmanuelle Nicot had in mind. First, the theme of influence, which is personal to him. Then, during her last short film, À l’arraché, the director was immersed in an emergency reception center for adolescents:

“What struck me there was that all these children who were there for proven abuse continued to unite with their families considering that justice was unfair to have placed them.”

Did you know ? While scouting for Adam, her previous film, Maryam Touzani made a decisive encounter in the medina of Salé with a man who ran a hairdressing salon for ladies. He greatly inspired the character of Halim (Saleh Bakri). The director recalls:

“I felt something unsaid in his life, something smothered in relation to who he was in his heart of hearts, and who he was trying to be in front of the world, in a very conservative.”

What is it about ? Three years after Pinochet’s coup d’etat, Carmen leaves to supervise the renovation of the family house by the sea. Her husband, children and grandchildren come and go during the winter holidays.

Did you know ? When the priest asks her to take care of a young man whom he is secretly taking in, Carmen finds herself in unknown territory, far from the bourgeois and quiet life to which she is accustomed.

From her teenage years, Manuela Martelli began to wonder about her maternal grandmother, whom she never met. The director recalls:

“There was a scent of mystery around her. At home, we had a series of objects that she had created: ceramics, paintings and sketches, as well as a sculpture representing a woman who sat enthroned in the living room . These objects aroused my curiosity.”

What is it about ? A new generation is politicizing issues around the body, sexuality and gender relations. For two friends, Nina and Yéléna, it starts with awareness. Along with a few others, they wonder why, in a society that claims gender equality is already there, access to pleasure is so difficult.

Atlantic Bar by Fanny Molins

What is it about ? At the Atlantic Bar, Nathalie, the owner, is the center of attention. Here, we sing, we dance, we hold on to each other. After the bar is put up for sale, Nathalie and the regulars come to terms with the end of their world and of a place that is both destructive and vital.

Did you know ? After spending time at the Atlantic Bar, Fanny Molins shot a series of photos that marked the start of the project. The director then returned for three years, without a camera. She then made friends first with a few regulars, then with Nathalie and Jean-Jacques, the bosses, both easy and difficult to access, like any bar owner.

She remembers: “The desire to write a film about them, about the bar, was born from the desire to show the individuality of those who are a representation, even downright an element of architecture, in the common imagination: the ‘bar pillars ‘”.
