The Citroen Ami and electric scooters lose one of their advantages

Until now relatively protected from the standards that revolve around so-called “traditional” cars, the Citroën Ami, which is a quadricycle with a motor, will be subject to technical inspection from next year, like scooters and motorcycles. It won’t be the only one in its category to have to go through the garage.

After several months of procrastination, the technical inspection of two-wheelers will gradually arrive in France, and more precisely from April 2024in accordance with a 2014 European directive.

This decree was published this Tuesday in the Official Journal. The first vehicles to be subject to this technical inspection, between April and the end of 2024, will be those registered before 1er January 2017.

What we call “motorcycle technical inspection” does not only concern two-wheelers. Indeed, in the lot, we also find cars without a license, the famous motorized quadricycles. Moreover, this technical inspection is actually called “technical inspection for motorized vehicles with two or three wheels and motorized quadricycles”.

A little respite for the Citroën Ami

Thus, vehicles in categories L1e, L2e, L3e, L4e, L5e, L6e and L7e will also have to go through the garage box. The last two concern motorists, since this corresponds to light and heavy quadricycles. If it would not necessarily have changed much a few years ago, with the success of the Citroën Ami and the new Ligier Myli, without forgetting the future Mobilize Duo, many (young) French people will now also be concerned by the technical control.

As stated above, to avoid mess in garages and extended delays, the implementation will be gradual. Indeed, the first models affected will be those registered for the first time before 2017, as for motorcycles. Thus, the first check must be carried out before December 31, 2024. In 2025, it will be the turn of vehicles registered between 2017 and 2019 then, in 2026, it will be those of 2020 and 2021.

For the Citroën Ami, this model having been released in 2020, if you are in possession of the small herringbone cart, the first check will have to be carried out in 2026. On the other hand, if you have a first generation Twizy, it will be necessary done before the end of 2024.

As specified in the decree, for vehicles put into circulation before 2017 and whose anniversary date of first entry into circulation is before April 15, the inspection must be carried out within four months from April 15, 2024. For other vehicles put into circulation before 2022, this check must be carried out within four months following the anniversary date of their first entry into circulation, within the limit of December 31 of the planned year.

How much will this technical inspection cost?

The government has not yet communicated on the prices of this technical inspection, but it wants to “as cheap and simple as possible”.

At the moment, we do not yet know how much this technical inspection will cost, according to initial information, the government hopes to keep the price below the 50 euro threshold. For their part, professionals in the sector are less optimistic and think that it will be around 72 euroslike for cars.

What points will be checked?

And precisely, compared to cars, what changes in terms of control? A list of control points will be checked with failures which may be, as for cars, “minor, major or critical”.

Thus, if there is a major failure noted, the result is unfavorable, with a second inspection to be carried out within two months. If, on the other hand, there is a critical failure, the validity of the check is limited to the same day.

These are generally malfunctions which constitute a direct and immediate danger to road safety or which cause a serious impact on the environment, for example defective brake lights or a brake fluid leak.

Speedy has just announced the implementation of a “ free technical assessment ” For ” define if the vehicle requires prior repairs » before passing the paid check.
