After work spread over a period of 11 years, the Cluny museum reopened its doors to the public on 12 May. Overview of new places.
Since 2011, the National Museum of Middle Ages experienced extensive restoration of its spaces and collections. As Séverine explains Popethe director of the museum, the work took place in several stages: “A partial restoration of monuments (completed in 2017)the construction of a new reception (opened July 13, 2018)the overhaul of the museography and the renovation of the spaces interiors». These last two parts have just been completed, allowing the public to return to visit this exceptional building.
The biggest molt of the museum
One of the objectives was to open the place up to daylight, i.e. a “prowess given the configuration of the premises”. Beyond allowing better accessibility and better comfort of visitthese works represent the greatest transformation of the museum since its creation in 1843, remember the AFP. From now on, the new visit route is designed chronologically, with thematic insertions. With a simple goal: make the vast period of the Middle Ages clear to an audience with varied expectations and knowledge.
In total, the exhibition route covers 2,500 m2, in 21 rooms, from Antiquity to Late Middle Ages. The emblematic place of the Latin Quarter houses 1,600 works, including one of the most famous medieval works in the world: The Lady with the unicorn. Considered as “The Mona Lisa of the tapestry”it consists of six panels of nearly 3 meters by 5 meters, on a red background, woven with wool and silk around 1500, details AFP.
