The CNIL is committed to overseeing the future of AI with a dedicated service

Faced with the current enthusiasm for AI, materialized in particular by the popularity of ChatGPT, the CNIL has decided to prepare the ground. Indeed, the National IT Commission has just announced the launch of a special service dedicated to the supervision of artificial intelligence.

Since its launch in December 2022, we only talk about it: ChatGPT. This conversational artificial intelligence developed by OpenAI is making headlines and websites. According to Microsoft, this is just the beginning and AI will soon be as revolutionary as the PC and the Internet.

Moreover, the Redmond firm is determined to be one of the heavyweights in the sector, as evidenced by its new investment of ten billion dollars in OpenAI precisely.

Of course, the future democratization of AI raises many ethical and security issues. In an attempt to answer these questions and above all to regulate the use of AI in the years to come, the CNIL has just announced this Monday, January 23, 2023 the creation of the SIA or artificial intelligence service.

The CNIL launches the SIA, a service dedicated to artificial intelligence

The idea? “Strengthen the CNIL’s expertise on these systems and its understanding of the risks to privacy while preparing for the entry of the European regulation on AI”. This special division, which will bring together 5 people (lawyers and specialized engineers), will be directly attached to the CNIL’s technology and innovation department. We will find at its head Bertrand Pailhes, former national coordinator for the artificial intelligence strategy within the DINSIC (ndrl: Interministerial Directorate of Digital and IS of the State).

As the institution specifies in its press release, the SIA will have the following main missions:

  • facilitate within the CNIL the understanding of the functioning of AI systemsbut also for professionals and individuals
  • consolidate the expertise of the CNIL in the knowledge and the prevention of privacy risks related to the implementation of systems that rely on AI
  • prepare for the entry into application of the European regulation on AI
  • develop relationships with ecosystem players

Note that the creation of the SIA is part of a continuity. In effect, the CNIL has been working on AI since 2017 now and in August 2022, the Council of State recommended in a study to make the CNIL one of the main national authorities for the control and regulation of AI systems. In addition, be aware that the CNIL has already launched work on machine learning databases to support professionals and help them guarantee the security of users’ personal data.
