Who should host French health data?

The Secretary of State for Digital Cédric O recently announced that the transfer of the hosting of the Health Data Hub to a French or European service provider would not take place before the presidential election.

As a reminder, the Health Data Hub, created in 2019, should make it possible to bring together all the health data of French people, in order to facilitate their reuse, in particular for research purposes. Faced with the controversies over the Microsoft host and the sensitive nature of health data, the government made a commitment at the end of 2020 to go through a French – or at least European – cloud provider by the end of 2022.

The iPhone will become a payment terminal

Apple has announced it: an upcoming update will transform any iPhone from the XS into a potential payment terminal. No need for additional accessories or hardware. Just an iPhone and the right software.

The “Tap to Pay” feature will initially work with Stripe’s Shopify Point of Sale app. It will accept payments by Apple Pay, of course, but also credit or debit cards equipped with contactless, and other digital wallets. A boon for small businesses and the liberal professions?

Tinder taxes over 30s

Tinder charges over 30s 65% more than other users, according to a report on Tinder pricing practices published by Mozilla and Consumers International. The dating app’s publisher was sued in California last year for the same practice.

Charged with ageism, the company defends itself by indicating that it wanted to offer a preferential rate to the youngest, in particular to make the platform affordable to students and young workers. Tinder says it began last year to end this pricing policy, which is no longer in effect in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. The rest of the markets should follow in the year.

The key figure: 191.7 billion dollars spent in the cloud

Companies around the world spent $53.5 billion on cloud infrastructure in the fourth quarter of 2021, bringing full-year spending to $191.7 billion, nearly $50 billion more than in 2020.

The big three dominated again this year, accounting for 61% of spending. AWS still leads with 33%, followed by Microsoft Azure (22%) and Google Cloud (9%). The cloud is still the preserve of GAFAM, and their revenues are constantly increasing.

Practical: How to better charge your smartphone

Leaving your smartphone on charge all night is not necessarily the best thing to do for your battery. Change your routine and introduce a program of two charges in the day:

  • 30 to 45 minutes of charging in the morning upon waking;
  • another 30 minute charge in the afternoon if needed.

The editorial zoom: Why quantum computing makes cryptographers tremble

The arrival within a few years of a reliable and functional quantum computer could disrupt the world of cybersecurity. Indeed, the cipher widely used today to encrypt data works, because the computing power required to crack it greatly exceeds the capabilities of traditional supercomputers.

Except that one of the strengths of the quantum computer is precisely its ability to break current encryption algorithms. This is why researchers are now looking into the development of post-quantum cryptography, by developing tools capable of resisting an attack carried out by a quantum computer. It remains to be seen whether they will be developed in time.
