The colossal – and questionable – project of energy renovation


DECRYPTION – Presented as an emergency, the thermal insulation of buildings will have a high cost. But for what efficiency?

Thermal renovation has a bright future ahead of it. Two texts have just been adopted with the aim of accelerating the pace over the next few years. The first concerns French public buildings, which the State and local authorities will have to renovate with an ambitious objective: to reduce energy consumption by 40% by 2030.

No less than 400 million square meters are concerned. On March 22, the National Assembly adopted a bill aimed at facilitating the financing of this project, the cost of which could rise to 500 billion euros.

“Lack of common sense”

On 14 March, the European Parliament voted for its part a text giving a boost to energy renovation projects for buildings, which represent 36% of the European Union’s greenhouse gas emissions. Objective: to achieve a “zero emission” building stock by 2050. The text provides that from 2028, all new buildings will be carbon neutral and equipped…
