Things are getting clearer for the new range of processors Raptor Lake Refresh from Intel. Not necessarily in a good way?

While it is difficult to know exactly Intel’s plans for its Raptor Lake Refresh, the range clearly appears as a way of occupying the ground while the real new architecture, Meteor Lake, is not intended for the same market segments. .

First exit…

Unofficially slated for release at the end of October, Raptor Lake Refresh is, as the name suggests, an upgrade of sorts from Raptor Lake, the 13e generation of Intel processors.

Like almost every time, a few weeks or even a few months before the release of a new range of processors, leaks related to the performance of said chips appear everywhere on the Net, and the Raptor Lake Refresh range is no exception. The first leak comes from Bapco’s performance measurement software.

The Core i9-14900K and the Core i7-14700K are thus presented there with, in the first case, the 24 cores and 32 threads capable of going up to a frequency of 6 GHz and, in the second, 20 cores and 28 threads up to at 5.6GHz.

Performance yet to be verified

The measurements made on Bapco were made while the processors were supported by a powerful GeForce RTX 4090. But strangely, the RAM consisted of 16 GB of DDR5-4800, when the processors will be at least planned for DDR5-5600.

This precision allows us to bring another that makes us see in a slightly different light the performances noted. Indeed, it seems here to be a question of a validation platform, and not of actually testing the performance of the configurations. In fact, we are less surprised to see the Core i9-14900K overwhelmed by the older generation: the Core i9-13900K is between 1 and 16% faster than its successor.

A comparison between the 13e and the 14e generation which is therefore not really of interest for the time being. We will have to wait for real performance tests for that. However, it is possible to note the difference of 14 to 20% between the Core i9-14900K and its little brother Core i7-14700K.

We said it at the beginning of the article, this 14e generation should arrive at the end of October, but we will know more at the time of Intel Innovation 2023, official presentation event of Meteor Lake with, no doubt, a little Raptor Lake Refresh in it. See you on September 19.
