But does our blockbuster still have a chance to shine at the 97th Academy Awards? The adaptation with Pierre Niney, already bought and distributed in different parts of the world, is expected in the United States on December 20. It is the historic distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films who will be in charge of offering the film in American theaters.
Pierre Niney at the Oscars?
Above all, according to Varietythe distributor aims to compete in all categories at the Oscars, including Best Picture – the most prestigious. Unlike the two previously mentioned films, The Count of Monte Cristo – presented out of competition at Cannes in 2024 – is not preceded by prestigious awards. As a reminder, The Artist allowed Jean Dujardin to win the Best Actor Award in 2011 and Anatomy of a Fall was awarded the Palme d’Or in 2023. These awards offer feature films a certain visibility. This is the case for Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard, awarded twice at the last festival.
A concrete campaign
To win the race, you also need a lot of money and a (big) promotional campaign. Distributors invest a whole budget to allow a film to circulate in all of Hollywood. For this, private screenings, a tour of American shows and a massive press campaign are necessary. This is the best way to jostle with the other competitors.

However, there are several aspects that can play in its favor. The Count of Monte Cristo is, first and foremost, a world-famous novel – and one that has been adapted several times in Hollywood. Americans are familiar with this story and are likely to be interested in this new version.
Pierre Niney, known for his humor and his likeability, also has every chance of seducing a young audience, in the same way as in France. In addition, the actor is very connected on social networks. Today, platforms such as TikTok or X play an important role in the popularity of candidates.

And we must not forget the power of “French charm.” While it is not easy for our films to exist across the Atlantic, Americans are seduced by the French, their sensitivity, their sense of style – and sometimes their accent.
