The cow and the prisoner: how was the cow in the film saved from the slaughterhouse?

On the occasion of the broadcast of the film The cow and the prisoner on Sunday March 20, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on C8, Télé Star reveals to you how the cow present on the screen was saved from the slaughterhouse.

Released in cinemas in 1959, the movie called The Cow and the Prisonercarried by Fernandel, will be rebroadcast on Sunday March 20, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on C8. Realized by Henry Verneuilthis feature film features the character of Charles Bailly, a French prisoner of war in Germany during the Second World War, portrayed on screen by Fernandel. In 1943, he decided to escape from the farm where he was employed. His ruse, crude and mad in appearance, consists in cross the country with the cow Marguerite held in a halter and a pail of milk in the other hand.

Having almost succeeded, he decides to part with the animal, not without having promised him never again “eat veal”. He then hides under a train to cross the German-French border. This feature film was the most popular film of the year 1959 at the French box office, with more than 8.8 million admissions sold. It is also the first major commercial success ofHenry Verneuil, who had to audition no less than 600 cattle before finding the headliner for his film. The cow Daisywhich was destined for the slaughterhouse after the end of filming, was also saved from this disastrous fate by the filmmaker.

The cow and the prisoner: strained relations between Fernandel and Henri Verneuil on the set

Concretely, Henri Verneuil, who had to return the animal to its owner, fiercely opposed his sending him to the slaughterhouse. Eventually, the filmmaker found a meadow in Normandy where Daisy could end his life peacefully. For the record Fernandel and the cow actually traveled the 200 kilometers from Munich to Stuttgart during the filming of the feature film, which took place from June 8 to August 15, 1959. Relations between Henri Verneuil and Fernandel were also difficult on this film. The actor’s demands so infuriated the director that the latter would later confide regret not having given the role to Bourville.
