France Télévisions is innovating in the broadcasting of the Paris 2024 Games. The group will launch, on May 8, a channel based on the Cloud, 5G and the Starlink network, to follow the journey of the Olympic flame.

The France Télévisions group, which will be the official broadcaster of the Olympic Games in France, is preparing to reinvent the way in which the event will be broadcast, with the launch of the Olympic channel called “France.tv Paris 2024”. To follow the Olympic torch relay, the group will use cutting-edge technologies such as the Cloud, 5G and Elon Musk’s Starlink network, to offer curious people and viewers an immersive and innovative experience, including a first in the history of broadcasting.

A dedicated channel, broadcast on the Internet, which will follow the journey of the Olympic flame in France

You may be aware that the Paris 2024 Olympic flame will be lit in the sanctuary of Olympia in Greece on April 16. After crossing the Mediterranean, she will begin her journey in France on May 8, entering the Old Port of Marseille aboard the Belem, the legendary three-masted ship.

This is the day that France Télévisions chose to launch the “France.tv Paris 2024” channel. It will be accessible on connected televisions, digital platforms compatible with the france.tv service, on the application of the same name and on the Internet, thanks to ISPs, in partnership with TVU Networks, a world reference in live broadcasting solutions.

The channel will broadcast the journey of the Olympic flame from the Games in France, 10 hours live per day, over a total journey of 1,625 kilometers spread over 80 days. And it will all be done thanks to a real transformation of broadcasting methods, completely new for a television group.

Retransmission thanks to the Cloud, 5G and the Starlink network which opens up the field of possibilities

France Télévisions has therefore decided to opt for solutions based on the Cloud, 5G and the Starlink network to follow the flame. This 100% Cloud approach should enable more flexible and responsive content production, while reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional distribution tools.

Moreover, these technologies will serve all aspects of the production of the retransmission of the journey of the flame. They will help with multi-camera production, commentary management, live feeds, graphic design, audio mixing, intercommunication between teams and, of course, broadcasting.

For the more picky, know that the project is based on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure, selected to offer an optimal experience to viewers. “ Through this collaboration, France Télévisions and TVU Networks are setting a new standard for the future — one that prioritizes innovation, sustainability and the power of cloud technology to produce closer to events and bring fans closer to the action », welcomed the TechLab and AI director of France Télévisions, Romuald Rat.

The partnership concluded between France Télévisions and TVU Networks has in any case the merit of constituting the first production entirely carried out on the Cloud, in terms of the broadcast of a major event. Perhaps enough to redefine the field of possibilities.
