VSIt was at the age of 17 that Howard Carter, born on May 9, 1874, landed for the first time in Egypt. Gifted for drawing, he accompanies the archaeologist Percy Edward Newberry to make surveys. His talent and thirst for learning quickly made him noticed. Here he is soon appointed head of excavations at Tell el-Amarna, the birthplace of Tutankhamun. As usual, Carter works like a beast of burden. No time to devote to a worldly existence, he will remain single all his life. Already, his perfectionist and touchy character impresses his colleagues.
Nine years after his arrival, Carter landed the prestigious post of chief inspector of the Egyptian Antiquities Service, which he had to give up five years later for falling out with prestigious French tourists.
