Expected in theaters on September 27, The Creator marks the return of Gareth Edwards (Rogue One) behind the camera. And unless you are anxious about the question of artificial intelligence, the project looks more than promising. In any case, its new trailer makes you want to see more.

We never hid it, in the editorial office, many of us loved the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (and its prequel series Andor on Disney+). Also, when Gareth Edwards is back in business (directing, but also writing with Chris Weitz), our eyes are wide open. Especially since the central subject of The Creator is a theme that is impossible to ignore today: artificial intelligence.

A post-apo thriller boosted with AI

Mainly worn by John David Washington (Tenet), The Creator takes place in the near future where humans and AI are at war. In this already exploited context, the actor plays an American soldier separated from his wife (Gemma Chan) during the conflict in Asia. Several years after this tragedy, he will have to return to service to try to prevent the East from winning over the West using a mysterious weapon created by artificial intelligence.

But in addition to looking for his wife who may ultimately still be alive, our hero will discover that this weapon is in fact only a little girl of 6 years old. Enough to shake up his certainties and modify his convictions about AI.

Among the rest of the cast, we can notably note the presence of Ken Watanabe, Allison Janney, Sturgill Simpson, Marc Menchaca and the young Madeleine Yuna Voyles.

A project led by Gareth Edwards

After the success of Rogue One in 2016, Gareth Edwards will therefore have taken his time with his new baby, which he also produces. Supported by a fairly reasonable budget for Hollywood of 80 million dollars (many scenes were shot outdoors in real sets, and not on green screens), the film seems to have already won over the first people to have seen it.

For Joseph Deckelmeier of Screen Rant notably : ” The Creator is a masterpiece and one of the best films of the year. It touches on many levels, with AI being a hot topic. Gareth Edwards does a masterful job of keeping the audience’s attention every step of the way. Madeleine Yuna Voyles needs to be in the Oscars conversation. »
