While the filming of season 2 of House of the Dragon continues, its co-creator Ryan J. Condal unveiled the heart of the next chapter of the HBO series. He also gave some hints about the potential duration of the program.

Children at the heart of the plot

Now the only master on board after the departure of co-creator and producer Miguel Sapochnick, screenwriter Ryan J. Condal delivered to our colleagues fromIndieWire on the element that will be at the center of the highly anticipated season 2 of House of the Dragon.

He thus declares that “this second season will focus on the children we only saw for a few episodes at the end of the series. They have now grown into young adults who have dragons, who are old enough to ride and fight. They have their own opinions and have a desire to emancipate themselves and defend the claim of the family”.

In the tradition of the great sagas, and the series Game Of Thrones from which it is derived, House of the Dragon naturally explores this question of generations, families and heritage. If Alicent (Olivier Cooke) and Rhaenyra (Emma d’Arcy) were at the center of the plot in season 1, then it is not surprising to see the young guard take the spotlight in the next chapter.

Two seasons… or more?

Ryan J. Condal also gave some details on the potential duration of the series. When launched in August 2022, House of the Dragon had signed the biggest start of an HBO series with 9.9 million viewers on its first day. At the end of season 1, the series even recorded 29 million viewers per episode. A figure comparable to that of Game Of Throneswhich of course makes HBO want to make the most of its investment.

House of the Dragon: HBO confirms the release date of season 2, and other Game of Thrones series

When asked how many seasons from House of the Dragon fans can expect, Condal remains happy to be vague: “It’s more than two. It’s part of the discussion we’re having right now. Or end the series in a proper way so that it doesn’t feel cut off, or just overstretched?” Something to reassure aficionados.

Season 2, currently in filming, has no official release date, but we can hope to see it land in Amazon Prime Video’s Warner Pass in the summer of 2024.

House of the Dragon is also available on OCS streaming platforms.
