The Crous informs students in Ile-de-France that they will have to vacate their accommodation during the Paris 2024 Olympics

Student tenants in residences of the Crous (regional center for university and school works) in the Ile-de-France region have been informed that they will have to make their accommodation available during the months of July and August 2024 for the reception of volunteers. and partners mobilized for the Olympic Games (July 26 to August 11) and Paralympic Games (August 28 to September 8).

The Crous confirmed, Thursday, in a message posted on Twitter, that its network ” has been requested by the State to mobilize a limited part of its housing”, advancing the figure of “less than 7%”. More than 3,000 student accommodation will be requisitioned to accommodate event staff, said the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Relocation to another residence”

“The census carried out has already made it possible to identify nearly 18,000 places available during the Olympic Games, including around 3,200 in the Crous”, the ministry said. It’s about accommodating “security forces, caregivers, first aiders, bus drivers or even private security agents”. The Crous presents this operation as a contribution to “an exceptional event for our country” for whose success “the Crous, like all public actors, will be there”.

The Crous wanted to emphasize that, “in the absence of lessons, summer corresponds to a period during which many public accommodation units managed by the Crous are not occupied. As an indication, nearly 30% of the dwellings are unoccupied at this time. »

This announcement sparked strong reactions. “To allow the organization of Olympic Games intended for the richest […], students will therefore be expelled from their homes during the summer of 2024 and find themselves homeless! » (sic), denounced, on Twitter, the student union Union.

The ministry clarified that all students making their room available during the Olympics will be guaranteed to find accommodation when the academic year begins in September. For those who plan to stay in the Paris region during this period, they will see “offer relocation to another residence”ensures the ministry.

On Wednesday, a user had posted on Twitter a screenshot of an email sent by the Crous de Versailles warning that the student residence should be “empty of any inhabitant as of 1er July 2024 ».

Contacted by Agence France-Presse, the establishment confirmed the authenticity of this email, indicating however that it was a “truncated version”. “Our message specified the right to relocation in July and August if necessary and the guarantee of finding your accommodation in September”reacted the Crous of Versailles. “Students will of course be individually accompanied by the teams of our residences”he continued.

Despite these commitments, the student union Unef demanded in a press release that the requisitions be made “only on accommodation” where students are “gone voluntarily” And “without any requisition which would force expulsion or removal”. He “also asks that the State financially ensure the rental of Crous rooms so as not to further widen the deficit of these public services” and said he regretted the lack of government support for the construction of new student residences.
