Fans are eagerly awaiting the sixth and final season of The Crown. The Netflix series traces the fates of British royals – since the 1940s. In the final season, the death of Princess Diana (1961-1997) is also an issue. Many critics already fear that the series makers could cross a line here. How detailed is the tragic car accident that killed the Queen of Hearts on August 31, 1997?

“Careful and thoughtful”

The creators of the Netflix series emphasize that they approached the scenes with “tremendous sensitivity”. “The show may be big and loud, but we’re not,” explained the executive producer Suzanne Mackie (37) at the Edinburgh TV Festival. “There was a very, very careful, long, long talk about it.” In the end, the audience will make their judgement. “But I think we implemented it very carefully and thoughtfully.”

As in the previous season, Elizabeth Debicki (33) will be seen again as Diana. “She’s an extraordinary actress,” enthuses Mackie. “She was so considerate and she loved Diana. We all had a lot of respect for this task. I hope that shows in the aftermath.”

In the accident on August 31, 1997, Diana’s partner at the time, Dodi Al-Fayed (1955-1997) and the driver of the car, Henri Paul (1956-1997), were killed on the spot. Diana was taken to the hospital and died shortly afterwards their injuries. British bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones (55) is the only survivor of the accident.

A lot of headwind for the production

The final season of the Netflix series “The Crown” is said to end with the wedding of Charles (74) and Camilla (76). The current king and his wife, then Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, tied the knot in 2005. As the British “Daily Mail” reported, citing insiders, the series creators hope that the critics will also fall silent with this positive ending.

The award-winning production, which retells the life of Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) and her family, has recently faced a lot of opposition. A controversy erupted at the start of season five when prominent figures criticized the portrayals of the characters and demanded a hint to viewers that the series is fictional

Old friends and new faces

In the sixth and final season of “The Crown” Charles is again played by actor Dominic West (53), Olivia Williams (54) plays Camilla. Imelda Staunton (67) becomes Queen Elizabeth II again, Lesley Manville (67) once again plays Princess Margaret (1930-2002) and Jonathan Pryce (76) can be seen as Prince Philip (1921-2021). Newcomers include Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy, who embody Prince William (41) and Duchess Kate (41). Luther Ford will also be there as Prince Harry (38).

A start date for the final episodes of the series has not yet been announced. The sixth season may appear on Netflix in late 2023.
