Indeed, the first customers received their copy of the electric pick-up during a major ceremony held at the beginning of the month. The end point of a long and difficult gestation, while the revelation of this newcomer dates back to 2019.
Security that raises questions
The manufacturer had to face many difficulties during the development of its vehicle, which hunts in the lands of the Ford F-150 Lightning. In particular, its aluminum bodywork is at issue, which did not prevent the firm from launching production a few months earlier. But if the electric utility vehicle convinces with its performance and its autonomy, one point still poses a problem.
It’s about security, related to body design of the vehicle. And for good reason, the manufacturer recently revealed images of the crash test, which did not fail to challenge specialists, as explained by the British press agency Reuters. They are especially concerned about the integrity of pedestrians in the event of an impactdue to the protruding edges at the front of the vehicle.
However, we know that the protection of the most vulnerable users is taken into account in particular in the awarding of scores by the independent organization EuroNCAP on the Old Continent. Which risks complicating the possible launch of the pick-up here, as English journalists have already raised. Especially since the design itself is not necessarily the only problem with the electric vehicle.
Some specialists also point the finger at the very design of the vehicle. The latter believe that “ the stainless steel exo-skeleton of the electric pick-up could injure pedestrians, cyclists and damage other vehicles on the roads“. And there, the material used is directly involved, due to its rigidity in the event of an impact.
Tesla denies
In fact, we know that aluminum is very hard and resistant, but also difficult to work with, which posed many difficulties during the design of the Cybertruck. Thus, experts point out the small number of deformation zones, which must absorb shocks in the event of a collision. A few days ago, the manufacturer decided to defend itself and deny the criticism of its Rivian R1T competitor. On X (formerly Twitter), the account dedicated to the electric pick-up published a video showing the latter hitting a wall at a speed which was not specified. We see the entire front part exploding into several small pieces, which is normal according to Tesla.
The message explains that “ During a high-speed collision, the Cybertruck’s front underbody casting is designed to break into small pieces. This helps reduce occupant impact by absorbing and distributing energy“. What reassurance about safety on board the pick-up, when Teslas are among the safest cars in the world?
No doubt, although the small pieces of metal could also represent a danger by flying everywhere during the impact. In all cases, the future of the Cybertruck in Europe remains quite compromised, For safety reasons.
