The Dacia Spring continues to turn the heads of the French (and diesels)

In January 2023, the Dacia Spring is still at the top of the podium for electric car sales. Another highlight: the MG4 makes a fanfare entry into the top 5. Diesel cars, meanwhile, continue to tumble.

The year 2023 promises to be rich in terms of the electric car. Whether in terms of future electric cars marketed, but also in terms of market share. The registration figures for January 2023 have just been published by AAA Datathe opportunity to take stock.

Electric car vs diesel: technical knockout

In January, electric cars represented 13% market share compared to other engines. A figure that has changed little in recent months, since it was identical in December 2022. But it was around 10% a year earlier, in January 2022. This growth is at the expense of diesel, down 33% compared to the same period last year. More electric cars are sold than diesel cars for several months in France.

Top 10 electric cars in France

But what interests us the most is the top 10 electric cars sold in France in January 2023. And, in this little game, Dacia comes in first place, with its Spring. Then there is the Fiat 500 in second position, just ahead of the Renault Mégane E-Tech in third place. At the bottom of the podium, the Peugeot e-208 overshadows the MG4, in fifth position. This hits hard, since in December 2022, it was 10th. This proves its appeal to the French, and we understand them, with its excellent quality-price ratio.

The rest of the ranking reveals the indestructible Renault Zoé in sixth position, closely followed by its little sister, the Renault Twingo. Then we find the Peugeot e-2008 in eighth position, glued by the Tesla Model Y. The Hyundai Kona closes the ranking in tenth position, just ahead of the Tesla Model 3.

The other highlight is the presence of the Genesis G80, registered in one copy. Does this mean that the brand will officially launch in France? It is likely, since the GV60, cousin of the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 could be marketed in France.

This ranking is not really a surprise, since it takes up, more or less, the 10 best-selling electric cars in 2022. Admittedly, in detail, the cars did not all have the same position, but c is completely normal.

Tesla’s sawtooth deliveries

Registrations vary a lot monthly according to certain manufacturers. The most difficult automaker to follow is Tesla, which delivers its cars by “waves“. The reason is simple: these come mainly from its Shanghai factory and are delivered by boat.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, Tesla delivered half of its electric cars in December alone, as can be read in the financial report. This figure even reached 74% in the second quarter of 2022. And precisely, the firm of Elon Musk wants to do better in the future, thanks in particular to a better global network.

We can thus cite the Berlin factory, which is starting to take off. This will enable delivery to European customers with a more regular flow. But, for the moment, only the Model Y Grande Autonomie and Performance come out of the German chains.
