2.6 million Duolingo accounts lost in nature
Duolingo is this mobile application dedicated to learning foreign languages, available for more than ten years already. With its gamification method (and numerous sponsored posts on social networks), Duolingo attracts many users (more than 70 million), especially young people, since half of the subscribers are between 18 and 34 years old.
For the past few days, Duolingo has been talked about for another reason, namely the leak of a lot of personal data. In total, more than 2.6 million accounts have been put up for sale on dedicated forums, at a price of 2 euros.
A security breach… a year old!
The data in question includes a lot of personal information, starting with the first and last name of the users, but also their e-mail address and other information. According to various experts, this data had already been put on sale for the first time at the beginning of the year.
Cybersecurity experts also indicate that the flaw that led to this hack had been known for… a year. The personal data of the victims were stolen by scrapingor the fact of “scraping” information from a website using a dedicated script.
In addition to language learning, Duolingo would have other projects in the pipeline, including the launch of an application dedicated to music. Various elements with a musical tendency have recently been discovered within the application itself, and everything should be formalized soon by the company, probably during its annual conference, the Duocon, on October 11.
