the day American democracy faltered

January 6, 2021 should have been a simple ceremonial day. The elected members of the American Congress had an appointment to certify the result of the presidential election, the winner of which had been known since November.

But that year, Donald Trump refuses to recognize his defeat and claims that the election was stolen and that massive fraud took place, without providing proof. Appeals to invalidate the ballot having failed, the outgoing president is appealing to the streets by urging his supporters to demonstrate in front of the Capitol while elected officials certify the election of Joe Biden.

Armed and prepared, the supporters of the former president will break down all the security barriers and enter the building to interrupt this democratic process.

During long hours of chaos, and while the lives of elected officials were in danger, Donald Trump refused to intervene to put an end to the violence.

In this episode of “L’Heure du Monde”, we retrace the events of January 6 minute by minute, using the testimonies of former White House collaborators to a parliamentary inquiry commission.

Then we come back with Gilles Paris, columnist at the World, on the conclusions of this commission of inquiry and the political and legal risks that this case poses to Donald Trump.
