After a fire in a high-rise building, two volunteer firefighters confessed to the arson at the start of the trial at the Darmstadt district court. The 21 and 22 year old men are charged with attempting to murder 43 residents, assault and arson. They are said to have lit the fire on October 31 last year in the basement of the eight-story apartment building in Offenbach.
The fire was set in the house where the 21-year-old lived with his mother. The house was chosen because the basement had a fire door. Both men from Offenbach had cycled to the volunteer fire brigade right after the arson. "So that we can get on the first vehicle and in the attack force," they said. "We both wanted to be heroes," they explained their motive.
