The Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem is dead. He died on Monday at the age of 79, according to Syrian state television. The state news agency Sana also distributed an official government statement on Muallem's death. A cause of death was not named. Muallem was in the diplomatic service since 1964 and, among other things, Syrian ambassador to Romania and the USA. He has been Foreign Minister since 2006. He made his last public appearance last week at a conference organized by Damascus on the return of refugees to the civil war country.
