The deadliest house fires in France for 10 years


The fire in a building killed several people in Vaulx-en-Velin in the eastern suburbs of Lyon (Rhône) overnight from Thursday to Friday.

2022: Bressuire and Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque

Five people, including a child, all from the Comoros, died on the night of July 7 to 8 in a fire in a building in the center of Bressuire (Deux-Sèvres).

Eight people – including a baby and a two-year-old child from the same family – perished in the fire of three buildings on the night of February 13 to 14 in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque (Pyrénées-Orientales). Three people are incarcerated in the investigation of a fire “criminal“.

2021: Saint-Denis of Reunion

At least five people died and twenty were injured in Saint-Denis de La Réunion in a fire of a scale unmatched for several decades, which affected a hundred apartments in a low-rent housing building.

The fire, which started on the night of December 12 to 13, quickly spread to the entire building through the wooden passageways, according to the emergency services.

2020: Strasbourg

Five people died and seven were injured on February 27 in a fire that broke out in the middle of the night in a building in the Strasbourg station district. The criminal track is favored by the investigators.

2019: Paris

Three people died and 28 were injured in a fire on June 22 in a building in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. The six-storey building, located rue de Nemours, housed a restaurant, a hammam and living quarters.

On the night of February 4 to 5, ten people died and 96 were injured in a violent fire that ravaged a building on rue Erlanger in Paris (16th arrondissement). A woman suffering from psychiatric disorders, who was in recurring conflict with a neighbor, must be tried at the assizes for having set fire. It is the deadliest fire in the capital since 2005.

2018: Guadeloupe and Estrée-Blanche

On October 31, six French tourists perish in the fire of their holiday home in Saint-François (Guadeloupe).

On January 7, five people, including two firefighters, died in a house fire in Estrée-Blanche (Pas-de-Calais).

2017: Mulhouse

On October 2, six people, including four children, perished and seven were injured in the fire of an HLM building in Mulhouse. One of the residents was sentenced on February 4, 2021 to 25 years in prison for having deliberately started the disaster.

2016: Saint-Denis

On June 6, a fire in a dilapidated building in Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis) caused the death of five people. Eleven are injured. In 2018, an Algerian was sentenced to 25 years in prison for having deliberately set fire to a mattress in the apartment he was squatting.

2015: Paris and Saint-Jans-Cappel

On September 2, eight people, including two children, were killed in an arson attack on a building housing immigrant families, rue Myrha, in Paris (18th). One of the tenants was sentenced on December 10, 2020 to 20 years in prison for starting the fire.

On March 10, four children and their mother were killed in Saint-Jans-Cappel (North), in the fire of their house.

2013: Saint-Quentin and Gennevilliers

On March 30, five children died overnight in a house fire in Saint-Quentin.

On January 2, a couple and three children died in an apartment fire in Gennevilliers (Hauts-de-Seine). Eighteen people are injured.

2012: Lannion

On the night of March 5 to 6, a man and four children perished in the fire which ravaged an apartment located in the attic of a house in the historic center of Lannion (Côtes-d’Armor). In 2014, a man was sentenced to 28 years in prison for setting fire to the building over a debt of 60 euros.
