The dematerialized driving license becomes general for (almost) all drivers

After a test phase of several months in the departments of Eure-et-Loir, Hauts-de-Seine and Rhône, the smartphone driving license is officially available for all drivers from this Wednesday February 14, 2024. A good thing, insofar as we are more inclined to carry our smartphone than anything else, payment card included.

Good news: holders of the old pink card driving license will also be able to register it, without needing to renew it to obtain the new credit card format launched in 2013.

The procedure for registering your license on your smartphone

Prerequisite: you must hold a national electronic identity card (CNIe), the one in credit card format which incorporates a secure identification chip . It is via this chip that you will authenticate yourself on the France Identité application.

You must then download the France Identité application (published by the National Agency for Secure Titles, ANTS, watch out for fakes on the stores), available on iOS and Android via the respective application stores.

Then you have to choose:

  • Retrieve your restricted information statement (RIR) in the My documents tab, a document which certifies that you have the right to drive and is available on the My permit points site. To do this, you will need your license number, which you can obtain in the France Identité application via a QR Code.
  • Import your driving rights. This method will only arrive later this year. It will query the road safety database directly. All you have to do is click on Import my driving rights.

Once the import is complete, all you need to do is go to the Wallet tab of the France Identité application to access it.

Eventually, it will be possible to import your insurance certificate and registration document. A great step forward and a new step towards putting an end to the paper format.
