Along with Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Alan Wake 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is arguably the most anticipated fall release by gamers around the world. If Insomniac did not present its game at Gamescom 2023 in August, the developers made good progress on the project and returned in the columns of Inverse to the philosophy that guided them in the design of the game.

Bryan Intihar, the artistic director of Insomnia, begins the interview by specifying that Spider-Man 2 will above all be a very general public game. As such, it must be as accessible as possible by offering gameplay that is easy to master. According to him, playing the Spider-Man, “it’s the ultimate fantasy […] we want to honor the fact thatBeing Spider-Man is a fantasy for so many people. They say everyone can wear the mask, but we want everyone to be able to wear the mask and be good at wearing the mask at the same time. The barrier to entry should be quite low “.

Getting started with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 promises to be very accessible

Die-hard gamers should still find what they’re looking for in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The designers envision the title as a large playground in which players will be able to give free rein to their imagination, whether by using new gadgets, or by combining the powers of the two heroes, Spider-Man and Venom, in action scenes that are always more cinematic.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will therefore follow the current trend of games that integrate a dimension of construction and customization like in Minecraft, Starfield or Tears of the Kingdom. That said, Marvel obliges, it is the storyline part of the game which will occupy a preponderant place, an important aspect so as not to get lost in this open world game. Mr. Intihar adds: “one of the key ideas [de la conception] of Spider-Man 2 was to make sure that everything we did was narratively and constructively […] The more we include a story that people can relate to, the less the game will feel like a list of missions to complete.” The game is expected to be released in September exclusively on the PS5, initially.
