The Devil Wears Prada: Why Meryl Streep felt insulted

Did you know that Meryl Streep almost didn’t play Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada? The reason: a salary that she found much too low!

Released in theaters in 2006, the comedy The Devil Wears Prada, broadcast this Thursday evening on TF1, would undoubtedly not be as successful without the presence on screen of Meryl Streep, brilliant in the role of the tyrannical editor in head of a prestigious fashion magazine. A role that the American actress almost never played!

If Meryl Streep came very close to not appearing in The Devil Wears Prada, it is because she showed herself, just like her character Miranda Priestly, to be uncompromising in business. The American, who would be ready to return to a successful saga, had in fact not at all appreciated the first financial proposal from the studios, considered far too weak for her taste.

“In my eyes, the offer was too light, not to say insulting. It perhaps did not reflect my real value for the project”declared the actress a few years ago, very cash, at the microphone of Variety magazine. “I put pressure on them, and they doubled the offer. I was 55, and I learned late how to negotiate on my own behalf.”

At the end of these tight negotiations, Meryl Streep will obtain this highly coveted role, notably ahead of Kim Basinger and Helen Mirren, also in the running. The opportunity for her to play opposite Anne Hathaway, who plays the character of young assistant Andrea Sachs on screen, a role that an actress had refused three times!

Meryl Streep, who was recently seen in the Netflix comedy Don’t Look Up: Cosmic Denial, appeared in the credits of the third season of Only Murders in the Building, available on Disney+.
