DJI today announced the launch of its new drone compact: the Mini 3 Pro.

With the Mini 3 Pro, DJI wants to combine the characteristics and performance of its previous models, including the DJI Mavic Mini 2 and the Mavic 2 Pro, in a drone with controlled dimensions and maintaining a featherweight.

Optimized design and new optics

The device comes in the foldable format specific to the range, which allows it to be transported easily. On the scale, it displays less than 249 grams, like the DJI Mini SE.

However, the DJI Mini 3 Pro is also adorned with some novelties in terms of design. The arms and the propellers have been adjusted to optimize aerodynamics, and therefore to lengthen the flight time of the device. The gimbal has been completely revised and developed to be able to perform inclined and vertical movements when shooting. The drone thus offers additional camera angle options.

Optical sensors on the front, back and under the device allow the DJI Mini 3 Pro to detect obstacles in three distinct directions. They are also used for the proper functioning of the Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS 4.0), which automatically calculates the safest trajectory when obstacles are detected during flight. Finally, these optical modules are assisted by the FocusTrack function, which allows you to keep a selected subject in the center of the frame.

4K compatible at 60 fps, slightly increased battery life

With the Mini 3 Pro, DJI promises an imaging system never before seen on a device of this size. Its 1/1.3-inch CMOS image sensor with f/1.7 aperture has double native ISO, and can capture photos up to 48 Mp or even shoot video in 4K quality at 60 frames per second. Remember for comparison that the DJI Mavic Mini 2 was limited to 4K at 30 fps or 1080p at 60 fps. Note that the HDR standard is supported, but only for 30 fps videos.

DJI chose large 2.4μm pixels to capture more light. The Mini 3 Pro should therefore capture more detailed images, especially in poor light conditions. Digitally, it can zoom up to 4x at 1080p, up to 2x at 4K, and 3x at 2.7K.

The manufacturer advertises a flight time of up to 34 minutes with the “Intelligent Flight Battery” and up to 47 minutes with the “Intelligent Flight Battery Plus”. Be careful though, with the latter the drone goes to more than 250 grams, and is then no longer subject to the same regulations as in its basic version.

Price and availability

The DJI Mini 3 Pro is available for pre-order now, with the start of deliveries scheduled for May 17, 2022. It is sold at a price of 739 euros without a remote control (for people who already have a compatible one). For 829 euros, the drone comes with DJI RC-N1 controls. The model with DJI RC console is sold at 999 euros.

What are the best drones? 2022 comparison

Thanks to miniaturization and constantly falling prices, drones are becoming more democratic and opening up to an ever-wider audience. But their operation and their performance levels can remain complex to understand for the uninitiated.
