In the United States, an 18-month-old baby boy died after being malnourished. His mother, a 39-year-old vegan, had imposed a drastic diet on him and neither she nor her husband came to his aid when he appeared at his worst.
A fatal diet. In the state of Florida, United States, Sheila O’Leary, a 39-year-old vegan mother, was convicted of murdering her 18-month-old son this Wednesday, June 29. The parents of little Ezra, underfedwere accused of doing nothing when he was obviously in a condition that required medical attention.
The very young boy died in September 2019 in Cape Coral, reports The News-Press. His parents had told the authorities that he followed a strict diet consisting only of raw fruits and vegetables, but was breastfed. At the time of his death, the baby weighed just under 8 kgor 3 kilos less than the average.
The mother faces life imprisonment
According to the parents, the child hadn’t eaten for almost a week and had trouble falling asleep. They did not seek any medical help, and then pronounced him dead. As Assistant District Attorney Sara Miller pointed out, the mother did not want to seek medical care for her son when she realized his health was deteriorating. “She chose to ignore Ezra’s pain, she chose to ignore his screams.”she said, before adding: “We are here because their children were so hungry that the youngest died of starvation.”. The prosecutor also said the couple were accused of neglecting their three other children.
Sheila O’Leary was finally convicted of murder and a series of child abuse incidents. The sentence has not yet been set but it now faces life imprisonment. Her husband, Ryan O’Leary, 33, will face trial on the same charges.
