If you want to enjoy the horse races at Royal Ascot with the royal family, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Even the length of your socks is regulated.
It is one of the most glamorous events of the summer, where the royal family, fashion and horse racing take center stage: Royal Ascot. The five-day event was considered the favorite event of the late Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022). This year, Royal Ascot will take place from June 18 to 22. High-ranking royals around King Charles (75) and Queen Camilla (76) are expected again, who will be subject to a strict dress code.
This applies to the ladies
The dress code for women who watch the horse races in Ascot in the Royal Enclosure – the area of the royal family – requires dresses or skirts that cover the knee. Miniskirts are not allowed, but pantsuits are permitted. Shoulder straps that are thinner than 2.5 centimeters are not permitted. Women wearing strapless, off-the-shoulder or halter-neck tops are not allowed in, nor are they allowed in transparent fabrics or if they show cleavage. For several years now, women wearing jumpsuits have been allowed into the royal area if they follow the rules for covering their shoulders and knees.
When it comes to fashion, Royal Ascot is famous for its colourful and extravagant hats. These are compulsory for women and the headgear must have a minimum diameter of around ten centimetres. Fascinators, i.e. small hats that are attached using hairpins, hair clips, combs or headbands, are forbidden.
This applies to men
Headgear is also a must for men in the Royal Enclosure in Ascot. They wear top hats with tailcoats. Suits must be black, grey or navy blue. In addition to a hat, a waistcoat and tie are also compulsory. Black, elegant shoes are permitted on the feet without exception, and socks must cover the ankles.
How to access the Royal Enclosure
The Royal Enclosure is open to invitation only, originally the area was reserved exclusively for the monarch’s guests. Members have access to a private square at the race track, a viewing point on the fourth floor of the main grandstand, several gourmet restaurants and a private car park, among other things.
