If you were thinking of swapping your coughing stick vacuum cleaner for an exceptional model, you still have a few weeks to wait to acquire (perhaps) the new flagship of the British Dyson: the Gen5Detect stick vacuum cleaner. This state-of-the-art model is to be released on May 17, which will cost a whopping €999. If inflation explains (in part) such a price, which can be considered prohibitive for a simple vacuum cleaner, the various innovations offered by Dyson also contribute to raising the bill. Indeed, the Gen5Detect marks a real break with its predecessors, as shown by the abandonment of the “V” nomenclature which to this day punctuates the different versions of the British brand’s stick vacuum cleaners.
A redesigned engine
According to our internal sources, it is essentially the new engine that justifies this name change. This one has been redesigned from A to Z to be smaller, more solid and above all more powerful. The small size of the Hyperdimium engine (since that is its small name) forced engineers to rethink its structure. It carries fewer parts (which would limit wear) and is now completely encased in its gangue to prevent the parts from having any play. For example, the engineers told us that the margin of error in the manufacture and placement of the driveshaft did not exceed 5 microns. Also due to the XXS size of the engine, it was also necessary to work on the cooling of the latter.
Everything has been thought out to increase the suction faculties in order to always eliminate more particles. Because if we are to believe Dyson, the Gen5Detect is able to suck up particles of 0.1 microns, the size of a (large) virus. Moreover, once captured, the aspirated waste, even the smallest, would remain confined in the device thanks to improved filtration. Indeed, the power of the Gen5 motor allows better air circulation through more efficient filters, with more pores. The V15 Detect’s Hepa filter is folded 136 times, while the Gen5Detect’s is 145 times. Before coming out of the vacuum cleaner, the air therefore has additional barriers to cross to be rid of impurities. Of course, these filtration capacities go hand in hand with a perfect seal.
To supply the motor with energy, the batteries have also been modified. And in order to guarantee maximum autonomy, the particle counter will be used to automatically modulate the suction power according to the dust collected. The less there is, the less the motor is stressed, without any further user intervention.
The revamped laser and vacuum tube
But there is more to an upright vacuum than just a motor. The green laser that appeared on the V15 Detect is back, but with an increased light intensity to better cast shadows and ultimately better reveal to the human eye the dust on the ground. However, in its daily use, it is especially the suction tube in two parts which is likely to be talked about. Indeed, the long nozzle is integrated into the suction tube. By pressing a button, you just remove the tube and the nozzle stays in its place: thus you gain in comfort, since it is no longer necessary to remove the tube, to place the accessory then to extract this last before replacing tube and head. Note that it is also possible to detach the two elements simultaneously using another key.
The new Dyson Gen5Detect vacuum cleaner should soon land in our laboratory to rub shoulders with our various tests. For future owners, it will be necessary to wait until May 17 and offload 999 € to acquire it.
