“The worst epizootic in history.” For Philippe Juven, the president of the interprofession of eggs (CNPO), as for all the French poultry sector, the first assessment is heavy, while the epidemic of avian flu ebbs in France. Egg producers deplore the slaughter of 3 million laying hens since the end of 2021, the price to pay to limit the spread of the virus. Admittedly, this only represents 6% of the French livestock. But with the subsequent reinstatement bans, the impact is much greater. “The losses will reach several tens of millions of euros, believes Philippe Juven. We are trying to limit the impact by restarting breeding little by little and under control, but French production should drop by around 9% this year.
