In France, bicycle sales have been fairly stable, with just under 3 million new biclous on average each year for the past ten years. 2,789,545 bicycles were sold in 2021, which makes it, according to the Union sport et cycle, the best-selling means of transport in France, far ahead of scooters (1,796,000) and cars (1,633,180).
Of this total, a quarter (659,337) are electrically assisted bicycles (VAE). This strongly contributes to the growth of the sector, since they represent 59% of the turnover of this market.
Despite the many purchase aids, the cost of an e-bike is five times higher than a bike without a motor. The average price today is 1,993 euros, compared to 423 euros for a bike without assistance.
More than 800,000 bicycles were manufactured in France in 2021, including 350,000 VAEs, and the projection for 2022 is to reach 1 million. If the VAE makes it possible to start cycling with less effort, it raises the question of the increase in the average speed of cyclists.
